Building a Wireless 360° Motorized Product Turntable

Creating seamless, vibration-free 360° rotation for commercial product cinematography, jewelry macro shots, and 3D photogrammetry scanning in the studio.

Why Build a Dedicated Turntable?

When shooting commercial product films (like the capsule holder videos for Karra, or leather goods for DUŠA shown in my commercial portfolio), standard manual lazy susans introduce micro-shakes that ruin macro telephoto lenses. Even minor hand tremors are amplified at 100mm macro focal lengths.

This build couples a planetary-geared NEMA 17 stepper motor to a heavy-duty industrial ball bearing ring, delivering repeatable rotations down to 0.05 degrees per second without jitter.

Key Technical Features

  • Continuous Filmic Rotation: Ultra-slow continuous spin (1 rev every 2 minutes) with TMC2209 silent microstepping.
  • Step-and-Shoot Mode (Photogrammetry): Automatically rotates the subject by an exact degree interval (e.g. 5°), stops, triggers the camera shutter via an optocoupler wire, waits 500ms for camera buffer, and repeats for a full 360° sequence (72 photos).
  • Wireless Smartphone Web UI: Hosted directly on the ESP32 access point — control speed, direction, ramp curves, and shutter delay without touching the table.
💡 Studio Tip: Eliminating Motor Resonance

Direct stepper shaft connections telegraph resonance into the product. Using a GT2 closed loop belt reduction between the stepper and the central hub decouples high-frequency vibrations from the filming surface.

Components & Local Sourcing

All core hardware is available in Egypt: the NEMA 17 motor and ESP32 board from Future Electronics, the 160mm lazy susan steel bearing ring from Ampere Electronics, and the 3D-printed hub printed in eSUN PETG from 3D Smart Shop.
